Samsung warns that some customers’ data may be at danger.
A large number of consumers have been notified by Samsung that their data may have been accessed and exposed to an unauthorized third party.
Those who made purchases on the Samsung UK online store between July 1, 2019, and June 30, 2020, in particular.
According to Samsung, particularly sensitive client data, such as payment information, is secure.
Breach of data at Samsung
The hacker is thought to have taken advantage of a flaw in a third-party program used by Samsung (via Bleeping Computer). Since then, the company has verified that it has “taken the necessary steps to resolve this issue,” which includes delivering a patch for the vulnerability.
An e-mail sent to clients reads: “On 13 November 2023, it was determined that an unauthorised individual exploited a vulnerability in a third-party business application we use, and that some personal information of certain customers who made purchases on SEUK’s eCommerce site between July 1, 2019, and June 30, 2020, was affected.”
According to the email advertisements, Samsung suspects that customer identities, phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses may have been compromised.
A corporate official verified to TechRadar Pro that the situation is only affecting consumers, staff, and shops in the United Kingdom:
“We were recently made aware of a cybersecurity incident that resulted in the unlawful acquisition of certain contact information from some Samsung UK e-store customers.” No financial information, such as bank or credit card numbers, or customer passwords, were compromised.”
Samsung also said it notified the data breach to the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office and contacted with affected customers, but didn’t go into much detail about how the issue occurred.
Some of Samsung’s most noteworthy phones were on sale during this time period, including the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S20, Galaxy Fold, and Galaxy Z Flip, which implies that individuals purchasing these models directly from Samsung UK may be affected.
