Some Google Pixel 8 owners are noticing ‘bumps’ and ‘ripples’ on their screens.

Our Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 8 Pro reviews will tell you that these are two of the best smartphones available right now, but they’re not without flaws, including, reportedly, different faults showing on the display if you’re in the unlucky few.

It’s difficult to say how widespread this issue is right now, although both 9to5Google and Android Authority have discovered a number of Pixel 8 consumers complaining about “bumps”, “ripples”, and “dents” developing on their phone displays.

You can see the complaints, as well as some photographic evidence, on Reddit and the official Pixel Phone help forums. It’s evident that it’s not impacting everyone who has a Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, but a small number of customers are definitely experiencing issues.

It’s tough to determine how common this issue is right now, but both 9to5Google and Android Authority have uncovered a number of Pixel 8 customers complaining about “bumps”, “ripples”, and “dents” developing on their phone displays.

The concerns, as well as some photographic evidence, can be found on Reddit and the official Pixel Phone assistance forums. It’s clear that it isn’t affecting everyone who has a Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, but a small percentage of users are obviously having problems.

Not always noticeable

A video (above) depicting one of the damaged screens provides a better understanding of what’s going on. “Some [dents] look like screws from the mainboard punching through it, others like the screen itself bends alongside the (long) edge,” according to the caption.

Some comments in the above-mentioned threads suggest that the problem is only visible in particular lighting conditions, such as bright sunshine. Others claim that the dents appear to come and go over time.

Based on deconstruction footage of the phones, one notion has been proposed that small springs inside the phone are pushing up against the screen. However, it does not appear to have an effect on the actual performance of these displays.

We’ll keep a watch on these allegations and any future Google responses, but the firm is already hard at work on a cure for a screen tint issue with the Pixel 8 Pro, after previously resolving an issue with Android 14 and multiple user accounts.
