Forget Gorilla Glass—E Ink displays could replace the backs of future phones

MWC 2024 isn’t just about smartphones, connectivity, and networks; it’s also about bizarre and beautiful technology, particularly from smaller manufacturers, like the Infinix E-Color Shift phone.

The E-Color Shift phone, which is now a concept/prototype but has the potential to become a reality, uses E Ink Prism 3 technology to alter the color and pattern of a phone’s back, either permanently or upon request by the user.

Essentially, it answers the question, “How can I constantly customize the back of my phone?”. That isn’t a question I expect many people to ask, but it must be on Infinix’s mind.

And it’s actually quite cool in real life. When the phone is charging, the back cycle through a variety of colors and patterns, which is strangely captivating and makes the phone look more like an ornament than a slab of metal and glass. When it is disconnected from a power source, it will return to the previous shown pattern and colors; check out the TikTok below to see it in action.

However, the E-Color Shift phone’s capabilities extend beyond its dazzling patterns. Things like alerts and a clock can be displayed, transforming the back of the phone into a simple always-on screen. However, because E Ink is being used, this is anticipated to be more power-efficient than even the most recent LTPO panels featured in the screens of some of the greatest phones, such the iPhone 15 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Now, I don’t think an E Ink rear panel will be a standard feature on future phones, especially since I believe more brands will use titanium and glass designs. However, it may open the way for more unusual charging cases, like as the E-Color Shift phone, which is at least attempting to infuse some originality into a mobile tech area that appears to be plateauing in terms of innovation and novel design.
