The Galaxy S23 Ultra has a familiar face that seems to be comparable to its predecessor. A familiar geometric form houses a modified display with a larger flat surface area, giving the S Pen stylus more room to work with. The front and back now include the most recent and durable glass from Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and all of the predecessor’s features – including IP68 dust and water resistance and 45W wired charging – remain.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra has the unique ability to record video in 8k at 30 fps, the newest and most high-quality picture standard available. The S23 Ultra offers improved low-light capture, a wider field of view, and enhanced zoom capabilities.

Samsung has also made an effort to include additional sustainably sourced components into the phone’s design, with recycled fishing nets, for example, used in the production of the S Pen’s inner cover and the speaker module, Some components, such as the 6.8-inch 1Hz to 120Hz adaptable Dynamic AMOLED 2X display and the 5,000mAh battery, have undergone seemingly slight improvements (better color accuracy and 20% improved efficiency, respectively).
A familiar-looking rear four-camera array conceals a new 200MP lead sensor with 16-to-1 pixel-binning, with the objective of growing the S23 Ultra’s ‘Nightography’ abilities for everything from general snaps to portrait photography, to videos of the night sky using the new Astro Hyperlapse mode, and in practice, although imperfect, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another phone with the same level of consistency, quality, and confidence across its various sensor arrays.
People who prefer to shoot with more control now have more editing options, with the ability to work with photos captured in Expert RAW mode at up to 50MP.
Users still get a 12MP ultrawide and dual telephoto lenses with 3x and 10x (periscopic) zoom, giving the S23 Ultra the same level of class-leading photography versatility as the previous generations of Ultra.
Samsung additionally announced that the Galaxy S23 series would receive up to four years of OS updates and five years of security patches. All three come with One UI 5.1 on top of Android 13, which includes, among other things, improved collaborative working in Samsung Notes and an improved Privacy Dashboard.
While the initial pricing (at least in the US) stays comparable with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung has doubled the entry-level capacity to 256GB, while the top-tier model comes with 12GB of RAM (up from 8GB on the base model) and a whopping 1TB of storage.
The S22 Ultra was the first of Samsung’s phones to completely combine Galaxy S and Galaxy Note sensibilities, casting off the contour-cut camera-led designs of its predecessor and launch siblings in the process. Instead, it selected a cleaner, more squared design, partially to differentiate itself from the conventional S22 and S22 Plus, but also to physically support an integrated S Pen pen.
