The action camera market isn’t just a two-horse fight between GoPro and DJI; Insta360 is also a major contender, particularly with its most recent offering, the Ace Pro. We’ve already had some fun with the 8K shooter, and you can read about it in our hands-on Insta360 Ace Pro review. It offers some unique capabilities that could propel it to the top of the action camera market.
Of course, the 8K video recording takes center stage – something neither the GoPro Hero 12 Black nor the DJI Osmo Action 4 can do – but the Ace Pro is more than just high-resolution video.
It uses the same 1/1.3-inch sensor as the Osmo Action 4 but is larger than the Hero 12 Black’s and shoots 48MP stills in JPEG or DNG raw format. If you don’t need 8K video, which will be accessible via a firmware upgrade when the camera is released, the 4K video feature set is pretty good, with up to 120fps recording.
Insta360 has also utilized AI neural networks to denoise video footage to deliver clean, low-light videos in a ‘PureVideo’ mode, and has an Active HDR video mode for when the light is good. You also get Insta360’s FlowState stabilization for smooth footage and 360-degree horizon lock a la GoPro that keeps your video levels no matter what action is taking place.
Then there’s the incredible design. Unlike its competitors, the Ace Pro sports a larger and heavier touchscreen that flips up for selfie pictures. When you’re out and about capturing video and photographs, having an easier perspective from any angle comes in handy, whether you’re vlogging or filming sports.
There are also some interesting AI-assisted video assist capabilities, such as gesture control to activate photo and video record modes with a timer, as well as video editing tools that can select the best sections of your films for you. You can also choose between rapid release magnetic attachments like the Osmo Action 4 and traditional mounts like GoPro onto handlebars and helmets. The camera is also waterproof to a depth of 10 meters.
What is the advantage of Insta360?
On paper, and as our hands-on review demonstrates, the Insta360 Ace Pro is one of the greatest action cameras available, even without the availability of 8K video recording ahead of the release. It combines many of our favorite features from the Hero 12 Black and Osmo Action 4 into a one package, while also introducing new ones.
So we must have the best action camera in the world on our hands, right? Both yes and no. With a tiny sensor like the one used in these action cameras, there is a trade-off between quality and quantity. The Insta360 has a lot of pixels, and at the time of writing, there’s no Log color profile option like in the Hero 12 Black, so color adjustments are limited.
The video quality is excellent, but even in HDR video mode, we saw a difference in photo and video quality, with photographs clearly packing more detail. After all, we anticipate that the majority of consumers will use a camera like this primarily for video.
Future firmware upgrades may bring improvements, and we’ll look into doing comparisons amongst the top action cameras, as well as thoroughly testing that 8K functionality. For the time being, Insta360 has really shaken things up with the Ace Pro – it is an outstanding action camera.
