6 new Netflix series with perfect Rotten Tomatoes ratings will premiere in 2023

Netflix is well-known for releasing dozens upon dozens of shows on a near-weekly basis. In 2023, the streaming service released everything from an experimental heist thriller in Kaleidoscope to the return of Black Mirror to a David Beckham documentary that lit the globe on fire.

These all had legitimate claims to be among the top Netflix shows, but what do they all have in common? Yes, they are all available on Netflix; beautifully done. Furthermore, none of them received a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, Netflix has released a half-dozen new shows in the last year that have received the renowned rating.

There are plenty of superb Netflix shows that have been total critical successes, ranging from a best-selling novel adaptation about a missing person’s case being reopened more than a decade later, to a Samurai adult animation from the writer behind Logan, as well as an underdog wrestling documentary about the sport’s up-and-comers. However, these may have slipped under your radar, so we wanted to spotlight them so you may add them to your watchlist and end the year on a good note.

Blue Eye Samurai

Sure, there’s an alarmingly big list of new adult animations vying for your attention, but Blue Eye Samurai is written by Michael Green, who also wrote Logan and Blade Runner 2049. In the 17th century Edo period of Japan, a biracial samurai named Mizu seeks vengeance against four white men, one of whom may be her father. We imagine Quentin Tarantino’s Mulan might look somewhat like this. The bloody action moments make it worthwhile a must-see – and the first episode is available on YouTube.

Cunk on Earth

Meet Philomena Cunk, a hard-hitting and horrifyingly informed investigative reporter aiming to bring people closer to the truth by interviewing specialists on human history. This five-part spoof documentary from comedian Diane Morgan and Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker is delightfully witty and authentically British. Its clever script is so superb that you frequently forget this is a fictitious character.

The Snow Girl

Aside from a few pacing flaws, The Snow Girl is packed with suspense, compelling performances, and every parent’s worst nightmare. The Spanish mystery drama, adapted from Spanish writer Javier Castillo, is divided into three timeframes when a five-year-old daughter goes missing during a parade in Málaga, Spain. It is then that a young newspaper writer (Milena Smit), who has experienced her own heartbreak, becomes involved to assist the parents and police in locating the child before it is too late.

Wrestlers

The highest praise you can pay Wrestlers is that you don’t have to be a wrestling fan to enjoy it. Ohio Valley Wrestling has seen Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Dave Bautista build their names before moving on to the big leagues. We get a behind-the-scenes look at OVW’s various highs and lows, its owner – former big-time wrestler Al Snow – and his financial woes, as well as the possible next great stars in the making, during the course of this seven-part series.

▶️ Wrestlers is available on Netflix.

Castlevania: Nocturne

Following the four-season success of the 2017 Castlevania animated series, a sequel focusing on Richter Belmont, a descendant of Trevor and Sypha, was commissioned. The plot of Castlevania: Nocturne, which takes place during the French Revolution in 1792, bites off more than it can chew, but the animation and character design remain magnificent, with top-class voice acting from Killing Eve star Edward Bluemel.

▶️ Castlevania: Nocturne is available on Netflix.

Dear Child

Dear Child is a psychological thriller mini-series based on Romy Hausmann’s best-selling novel of the same name. It has received positive reviews. It begins when an unknown woman is hit by a car in Stuttgart, Germany, bringing to light a 13-year-old missing persons investigation. Except for loads of twists and turns that will trap you in from episode one, with music from The Last of Us composer Gustavo Santaolalla.

▶️ Dear Child is available on Netflix.

iOS

Apple‘s iPhones run the iOS mobile operating system. The software, which was first debuted with the original iPhone in 2007, has remained a feature of every iPhone issued since, and it continues to serve as the foundation for other Apple operating systems such as iPadOS, tvOS, and watchOS.

Apple’s App Store is the heart of its iOS mobile operating system, with over 2 million programs tailored for the platform currently available in the company’s virtual marketplace.

iOS versions are introduced on an annual basis, usually ahead of new iPhone releases, with iOS 17 set to replace iOS 16 in September 2023.

Android

Android is the mobile operating system that powers the vast majority of smartphones sold worldwide. It competes with Apple’s iOS as the most popular operating system.

In contrast to iOS, which is only available on iPhones, Android is available on a wide range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, and televisions. Furthermore, it is used by a variety of companies, including Samsung, Sony, Xiaomi, and, of course, its originator, Google. Because of Android’s versatility and flexibility, there are Android phones at every price point with capabilities like quick charging, high-resolution displays, and multiple cameras.

Google, like Apple, releases new Android versions on an annual basis, though other Android manufacturers will frequently combine their own features and brand it as something else. Android 13 debuted as OneUI 5 on Samsung phones and ColorOS 13 on Oppo phones, for example.

Android 14 is likely to be released on Google Pixel phones by the end of 2023, with other smartphone makers following soon after.

Apple will allow RCS communications from Android phones starting next year.

Breaking: Apple will support RCS, putting a stop to the green bubble scandal.

According to Technovatica, Apple will finally add RCS messaging standard functionality to the iPhone in a software version early next year.

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is a communications standard developed by the GSM Association that has been embraced by a large portion of the Android ecosystem. It is intended to uniformly upgrade messaging communication across mobile devices. Despite cooperating with the consortium, Apple has persistently refused to provide RCS compatibility to iPhones until now. Apple, on the other hand, is altering its tune.

“We will add support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as published by the GSM Association, later next year.” We believe that the RCS Universal Profile will provide a better interoperability experience than SMS or MMS. This will complement iMessage, which will remain the greatest and most secure texting experience for Apple users, according to an Apple representative.

Apple officially concedes that RCS is superior to MMS and SMS, but emphasizes that RCS will not replace iMessage and its plethora of features such as memojies, stickers, and the ability to edit and unsend messages. Instead, RCS standard support will be included in an unannounced software update, and carriers will be responsible for implementing it.

When RCS does arrive on your best iPhone, it will mark the end of “green bubble shame” for your best Android-owning friends, family, and coworkers. They’ll be able to send and receive high-resolution photographs and videos to and from your iPhone. Group messaging could become platform-independent. They’ll also be able to share their whereabouts with you via RCS-enabled texting.

There is, of course, a snag here. End-to-end encryption is still not supported by the RCS standard. Apple, which has provided encrypted texting for over a decade, is a security zealot. Apple has stated that it will not support any proprietary extensions that seek to add encryption on top of RCS and instead hopes to collaborate with the GSM Association to introduce encryption to the standard.

However, as long as third-party apps follow the universal RCS standard, they will be compatible with Apple’s upcoming RCS compatibility.

Apple did not specify which iOS update would contain RCS capability. It’s also unknown how many iPhone generations will support the communication protocol.

A breakthrough in messaging

The announcement comes after Apple’s main rivals and Android leaders, Samsung and Google, announced support for the standard. Google has been particularly scathing of Apple’s apparent inability to accept what appears to be a superior – at least in some ways – universal standard.

“No matter what phone they have, everyone deserves to communicate in ways that are modern and secure.” That is why we have worked closely with the mobile industry to expedite RCS adoption, and we are pleased to see Apple take the first step today by embracing RCS. We welcome Apple’s engagement in our ongoing work with the GSMA to expand RCS and make messaging more egalitarian and secure, and we look forward to working with them to deploy this on iOS in a way that works well for everyone,” a Google representative said in an email to Technovatica.

Nothing also avoided Apple’s RCS rejection by bringing iMessage to its Android-based phones just days ago.

Many people worried how Apple CEO Tim Cook would react to this “cheeky” gesture at that point. There’s no indication of a direct reaction. In fact, it’s more likely that Apple saw the writing on the wall when the European Union pressured the tech giant to comply with several criteria through the Digital Markets Act. The body clearly had some success with the USB-C connections, which are now standard on all iPhone 15 models.

Surely, the EU would have compelled Apple to implement RCS by 2024. It no longer needs to bother. Apple has agreed to participate.

By the way, there’s no indication on whether this RCS support will include a third message bubble color.

Season 4 of The Boys will be available on Prime Video in 2024, and a teaser may be forthcoming.

What a diabolically fantastic day!

Season 3 spoilers for The Boys follow.

It’s official: Season 4 of The Boys will be available on Prime Video in 2024.

The Boys’ official account confirmed the return of the smash Prime Video series next year in a post on X (previously Twitter). Season 4’s first two posters, which portray Anthony Starr’s Homelander as a famed Supe (well, ‘celebrated’ as in ‘fearfully revered by the public’) and Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher looking quite lonely among balloons and confetti littering the ground, made the announcement.

There’s a lot we can deduce from the posters’ iconography, such as Billy maybe spending most of season 4 alone with his thoughts. After all, as we discussed in our The Boys season 3 ending explained post, Butcher discovered he only had 12 to 18 months to live after being exposed to experimental super-serum V24, so it’s a suitable one sheet for the Supe-fighting group’s de facto leader.

But hold on, there’s more. A still image of Urban’s Butcher is accompanied by the text “Big day, lots to do” in another post on The Boys’ different social media sites.

Is the first teaser for the fourth season of the hit R-rated program going to drop? Perhaps. Principal photography commenced soon after The Boys season 4 was revealed to be in development in June 2022. Filming completed in April, thus a teaser, even if it’s only 30 seconds long, may be broadcast today (November 8).

Alternatively, we could get some new casting information, a quick plot explanation, or another major announcement. For starters, The Walking Dead’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan was reported to join the cast of The Boys season 4 in August 2022, so Amazon may choose to reveal his character today instead.

We’ve contacted Prime Video to see what additional surprises are on the way, and we’ll update this piece if we hear back.

Season 4 of The Boys has obviously raised fan expectations. Since its launch in July 2019, the Eric Kripke-created TV adaptation of the iconic comic book series has gone from strength to strength as one of the top Prime Video shows. And, with Kripke announcing that season 4 will not be the series’ final installment, we can expect even more hijinks in The Boys universe after the fourth season is aired.

Indeed, a second season of Gen V, the first live-action spin-off set in this universe, is already in the works. The season 1 finale of Generation V also opened up some potentially major plot strands for The Boys’ next episode, so be sure to read our Generation V season 1 ending explained guide to discover more about what’s at stake in the main series. With the possibility of more unnamed spin-off projects or a second season of animated anthology series The Boys Presents: Diabolical, The Boys’ TV universe isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

The week’s top 7 tech stories, ranging from The Beatles to new MacBook Pros

Have you missed the week’s key IT news? This is your firmware update.

This week, Apple went uncharacteristically Halloween with their ‘Scary Fast’ event, and while the only truly horrifying thing was the price tags, it did give some computing treats.

We got a trio of M3 CPUs, new MacBooks, and a revamped iMac to seduce us into bankruptcy before Christmas, as you can see below. But that wasn’t the only huge tech news this week; at the other end of the affordability spectrum, Netflix added a useful new downloading option to its cheapest, ad-supported subscription tier.

Even more stunning than the Apple event was The Beatles’ comeback for one final song, Now and then, made feasible by AI-assisted ‘demixing’ software. With the arrival of the Nextbase iQ, AI smarts also improved a slightly less culturally relevant group, dash cams.

So, if you missed this week’s tech news, don’t worry: it’s all here in one five-minute digest, ready to download into your old-school brain matter…

7. The Nextbase IQ provided a cognitive boost to dash cams.

After years of development, the Nextbase iQ was finally released this week, ushering in a new era of’smart’ dash cams. The always-connected iQ is a dual-camera gadget thanks to a 4G connection (and electricity from your vehicle’s OBD II plug). It has a front-facing camera in 1K, 2K, or 4K resolution, as well as an ultra-wide cabin camera with the potential for an additional back camera.

The costly hardware is remarkable, but the iQ’s AI-powered smart features and subscription-based services, with promising capabilities like ‘Guardian mode’ in the works, are perhaps the most appealing selling points. Our Nextbase iQ review goes into greater detail about this excellent on-board camera, but in a nutshell, it does the job for you if any tough situations emerge, and it seems poised to join our list of the best dash cams.

6. Netflix’s most affordable tier received an unexpected boost.

Netflix’s cheapest ad-supported plan (which costs $6.99 / £4.99 per month) sounds enticing, but it hasn’t previously allowed you to download movies or TV shows – until now. Netflix said this week that its ad-supported subscription, like its more expensive ad-free levels, now supports downloads on supported devices.

Additionally, those downloads will be free of advertisements. So, if you spend the majority of your commute watching Netflix, that ad-supported plan might be the one for you, as long as you don’t mind the absence of 4K or the opportunity to add more individuals who don’t live with you to the account.

Netflix is definitely pleased to see more customers join up for that package, as it earns money from advertisements. However, it also means that streaming is becoming increasingly difficult to discern from cable TV.

5.The final Beatles song has arrived, thanks to AI.

We witnessed an AI-created song by Drake and The Weeknd (or imitations of them) go viral on TikTok earlier this year. This week, however, a much less controversial application of machine learning technology provided us with a somber but emotional farewell song from The Beatles.

Now and Then had lain dormant for five decades, ever since John Lennon recorded a demo of the song in the 1970s. However, Lennon’s vocals were split and blended in stereo and Dolby Atmos with some newly recorded instrumentation owing to the ‘demixing’ technology utilized by director Peter Jackson and his colleagues on the Disney Plus docuseries Get Back.

Right now, you may listen to the song above or on your favorite streaming provider. True fans, on the other hand, will watch the accompanying short documentary and purchase the double A-side on vinyl.

4. LG’s TV-on-wheels returned to our lives.

LG provided some light relief this week with the UK introduction of the StanbyME, a 27-inch Full HD TV on a wheelable stand. The StanbyME has previously been available in various regions, notably the United States, for some time, but we were delighted to see it return to our life on November 29.

The StanbyME is a fun, quirky TV that appears to be great for professional workplaces with its screen mirroring function for video chats and for folks who absolutely can’t miss any sport (even for a toilet break) because it can be easily moved around on its wheels. The StanbyME appears to be a good idea, with HDR10 compatibility and webOS built-in for all your apps like Netflix.

The StanbyME, however, is more of a curiosity item for people with money to spare than your next critical TV buy, with a debut retail price in an India ₹83,066 (it’s $999 in the US).

3. The iMac received a long-awaited upgrade.

If you like all-in-one laptops, particularly Apple’s, this was a great week for you. Apple has finally refreshed its iconic iMac series after a years-long hiatus.

The new baseline M3 Apple Silicon SoC was installed in the very thin and vibrant collection. The designs appear to be basically the same, but the new CPU – a considerable upgrade from the first-generation Apple Silicon M1 – will provide faster general performance and greater gaming capabilities.

We mean it when we say Apple didn’t do anything else to the all-in-one system. Everything is the same, from the 4.5K Retina display and the large chin below it to the lightning port-charging Magic Keyboard and Trackpad.

Nonetheless, this was a solid and appealing device in 2021, and the looks remain – and are now accompanied by what appears to be a much faster and smarter SoC. This may be a victory, but we’ll wait judgment until we’ve had a chance to test Apple’s latest iMac.

2. Apple developed a trio of hot M3 chips.

The new Apple M3 CPU, along with its Apple M3 Pro and Apple M3 Max siblings, is reshaping the Mac and MacBook lineups with significant performance improvements and more streamlined specifications.

The increased graphics capabilities of the Apple SoCs are possibly the most significant difference between the Apple M2-series and these current CPUs. These are Apple’s first CPUs with hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading. The former improves the chip’s ability to realistically shade an entire 3D rendered object quickly, allowing for more complex scenery in games and other real-time rendered content.

This, along with a new method of processing memory requests from the graphics engine, would undoubtedly make the Apple M3-series chips a much more tempting platform for playing the top PC games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and others.

1. The MacBook Pro was given an M3 facelift.

Apple did not revamp its MacBook Pro range during its unusual ‘Scary Fast’ event, instead giving it a substantial brain transplant with a trio of all-new M3 Apple Silicon SoCs.

The new M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max can be found within the new MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch (Apple has retired the 13-inch variant). The goal here is to upgrade the MacBook Pro into a top-tier workhorse portable with features like industry-first dynamic caching. This, together with in-hardware ray tracing and mesh shading, frees up more unified system memory to handle the most demanding video and creative tasks.

Combining these new capabilities might make these new MacBook Pros capable gaming systems, among other things. Of course, we won’t know for sure until we put these new computers through their paces.
