The iPhone 16 component leak may have revealed a new camera design

It may seem like a long time until the iPhone 16 launches, but the next Apple flagship series could arrive in as little as seven months – and a fresh component leak provides us a glimpse of the makeover that may be coming to the back camera module.

Schematics obtained by tipster Majin Bu (via MacRumors) show two camera lenses stacked on top of each other in a vertical layout, which differs from the diagonal alignment found on the iPhone 15 and other recent models.

In reality, this vertically layered method dates back to the iPhone 12, which was released in 2020. Of course, the Pro versions (including the iPhone 15 Pro) feature an additional lens, thus already use a vertical alignment of sorts.

This makeover did not come out of nowhere: we’ve already seen this new/old camera setup in leaked renders from earlier this month, so there’s a growing body of evidence that this is the path Apple is taking.

Rumors so far

Rumors about the iPhone 16 are starting to spread quickly. Both the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to have larger batteries, albeit the one inside the iPhone 16 Plus is thought to be less in capacity.

We would expect performance improvements inside the phones, and this is exactly where the rumors point. There has also been rumors of a new Capture button, which would give photographers and videographers more control over their shots.

There’s also the software side: we expect hear a lot more about iOS 18 in the coming months, and it’s said to bring a slew of artificial intelligence advancements to the iPhone series, which is now the hottest trend.

As September approaches, when Apple normally unveils new iPhones, we may expect additional leaks and rumors about the iPhone 16 series, as well as more information about this upgraded camera module design.
